World Refugee Day is observed on 20th June
World Refugee Day is observed every year on 20th June. The theme of World Refugee Day 2022 i'Whoever. Wherever. Whenever. Everyone has the right to seek safety'. It is organized to honor refugees around the world. World Refugee Day was celebrated for the first time on 20 June 2001.
According to UN statistics, 20 people are forced to flee their homes every 1 minute to avoid terror, war and conflict. By the end of 2021, a total of 89 million people have faced forced deportation within or l outside their home country. Of these, 53 million have been internally displaced and 27 million people have declared refugee status. Apart from this, about 46 lakh people seek asylum.
Refugees
The term has been defined by the United Nations in Article 1 of the 1951 Convention on the Status Refugees. A refugee is someone who is unable or unwilling to return to their l country of origin because of fear of persecution because of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion.
