Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe Resigns
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has resigned. Wickremesinghe resigned saying,'He has taken this decision to ensure the safety of citizens'. Apart from this, Sri Lankan President
Gotabaya Rajapaksa has announced his resignation.
After months of protests over the issue of economic mis management, lakhs of people gathered in the capital Colombo demanding the resignation of Rajapaksa. Protesters barged into the President's official residence and set the Prime Minister's residence on fire late in the night.
Mr. Rajapaksa will resign on 13th July. Parliament Speaker Mahinda Abhaywardene said the President has decided to resign to ensure anpeaceful transfer of power. He asked the people to respect themlaw.
He urged them to respect and.maintain peace. Protesters at the presidential residence said the time had come to get rid of the.President and the Prime Minister and ensure a new era for Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis in 70 years with.tremendous inflation. There is also trouble for the import of food, fuel.and medicines. Foreign exchange.reserves have been exhausted due.to which the sale of petrol and diesel for private vehicles has to be banned.
