Indian Navy gets aircraft carrier 'Vikrant'

The Indian Navy has received the delivery of the iconic indigenous aircraft carrier Vikrant from Cochin
Shipyard Limited Kochi on 28 July 2022. It was designed by the Directorate of Naval Design (DND) of the Indian Navy.

It is a public sector shipyard under the Ministry of Shipping (MoS) built by CSL, named after India's first
aircraft carrier Vikrant. The aircraft.carrier Vikrant played a major role.in the 1971 war.

The delivery of the aircraft has.been ensured under the Azadi Ka.Amrit Mahotsav program. It is.believed that this is the.reincarnation of Vikrant, which will prove to be effective in further.strengthening India's maritime

IAC Vikrant is 262 meters long and.weighs around 45,000 tons. It is much bigger and equipped with
advanced technology than its predecessor. The ship is powered by four gas turbines totaling 88 MW.of power. It has a maximum speed of 28 knots. The total cost of the aircraft carrier is Rs 20,000 crore.

The project has been completed in three phases of contract between MoD and CSL. These phases were
completed in May 2007, December 2014 and October 2019 respectively. It has 76 percent indigenous
material, fulfills the vision of self- reliant India. This ship has been built under the Make in India
Initiative.

Vikrant is built with the capability of machinery operation, ship navigation. It has been designed to
accommodate an assortment of.fixed wing and rotary aircraft.

The ship is suitable for.indigenously built Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA). It is capable of flying.MiG-29K fighter jets, Kamov-31, MH-60R multi-role helicopters.

The aircraft carrier has an air wing of 30 aircraft. It will perform better.during flight. A large number of indigenous equipment and machinery have been installed on the aircraft carrier.
