Leh airport to become country's first carbon-neutral airport
Leh airport is being built by the Airports Authority of India as India's first carbon-neutral airport. In hybridization with a solar PV plant, a 'geothermal system' will be provided for heating and cooling purposes in the new airport terminal building.
The system works by exchanging heat between the air and the ground as its heat pumps are used to heat and cool the space, as well as to heat the water.
The main feature of this process is that it concentrates and utilizes naturally existing heat. The adoption of Geothermal System in the Leh Airport Terminal Building Project is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by 900 tons per year.
