Leicester Cricket Ground in England named after Sunil Gavaskar
Recently the Leicester Cricket Ground in England has been namedbafter the great Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar. The Leicester Cricket Ground, which is owned bybthe India Sports and Cricket Club, has been named Gavaskar in recognition of his immense contribution in taking Indian cricket to a certain height.
This is the first time that a cricket stadium in England has been named after an Indian cricketer.BActually, the campaign to change the name of this ground was
started by Keith Vaz, MP of England. Earlier, stadiums have been named after Gavaskar in Kentucky and Zanzibar in Tanzania.
Sunil Gavaskar has scored 13214 runs in his illustrious career spanning 16 years from 1971 to 1987 which includes 35 centuries. He became the first cricketer to
complete 10000 test runs in test cricket. He achieved this feat against Pakistan in Ahmadabad on 7 March 1987. He also played more than 100 ODI matches for India. After retirement, he is earning a name in commentary. Apart from this, he has also written his
autobiography Sunny Days.
Gavaskar played a total of 125 Test matches for India in which henscored 10122 runs with 34 centuries. His average of scoring runs in this format was 51.12. At the same time, he played 108 ODI matches in which he has 3092 runs in his name. Sunil Gavaskar was
part of India's 1983 World Cup winning team.
