Alluri Sitarama Raju was born on 4 July, 1897. He fought against the British government in the Eastern Ghats region to protect the interests of the tribal community. He was the leader of the Rampa Rebellion of 1922. He was nicknamed "Manyam Veerudu" (hero of the forest) by the local villagers for his heroic deeds.

In the year 1924, Alluri Sitarama Raju was taken into police custody and publicly shot dead after being tied to a tree, effectively putting an end to the armed rebellion.

Many programs will be organized by the government during this one year long festival (Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav).

Pandarangi, the birthplace of Alluri Sitarama Raju, will be conserved in the Chintapallih area in Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh. The government has approved the construction of the Alluri Dhyan Temple in Mogallu. An idol of Alluri Sitarama Raju will be
installed in this temple and documentaries based on his biography will be made.
