Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramanna Recommended to make U.U. Lalit the Chief Justice
Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana recommended name of Justice U.U. Lalit for the 49th CJI. He has sent his recommendation to Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju. Current Chief Justice N. V. Ramana is retiring on August 26.
In line to become the next Chief Justice of India (CJI), the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, Justice U.U. Lalit has been a part of several landmark decisions including outlawing the practice of 'triple talaq' among Muslims.
If appointed as the next Chief Justice, he will be the second Chief Justice to be elevated directly from the Bar to a bench of the apex court. Before him, Justice S.M. Sikri was the first lawyer to be directly elevated to the apex court bench in March 1964. He became the 13th CJI in January 1971.
