Nancy Pelosi arrives in Taiwan, tensions with China escalate
Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on the night of August 02, 2022. With this, she has become the highest US official to visit the self-governing island. Pelosi's visit has increased tensions between China and the US.
China has been claiming that Taiwan is part of it. It opposes foreign officials' visits to Taiwan
because It (China) feels it is tantamount in recognizing the island territory as sovereign. China has threatened to have "serious consequences" if Pelosi travels to Taiwan.
China has termed such high-level visits as interference in its internal affairs. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman and Assistant
Foreign Minister Hua Chunying said the US would "definitely pay the price for undermining China's sovereignty and security interests and be held responsible".
After the Reports of Pelosi's possible visit to Taiwan surfaced Chinese spokespersons have been issuing warnings of military action since then.
According to media reports, military deployment from China, America and Taiwan is increasing in the region, due to which the situation remains serious as from tensions and misunderstandings. Chinese fighter jets are flying in Taiwan's air defense zone.
The Chinese military has also announced military exercises in some areas of the South China Sea and Bohai Sea from August 2 to August 6, during which entry is restricted.
China-Taiwan Dispute
The biggest dispute between China and Taiwan is over the official identity, where on the one hand the Communist Party of China wants official recognition for the 'People's Republic of China', while the people of Taiwan want official recognition for the 'Republic of China'.
It is noteworthy that most of the countries of the world recognize 'People's Republic of China' (PRC) but the number of countries that recognize 'Republic of China' (RC) is very less.
Apart from this, there is also a large section of China that sees Taiwan as an integral part of China; this class is considered a supporter of 'One-China Policy'.
According to this group, Taiwan is an integral part of China and those who want to establish diplomatic relations with the 'People's Republic of China' will have to end their diplomatic ties with the 'Republic of China'.
Supporters of this policy believethat Taiwan is part of China and has been separated from China for some time and will soon be included in China through diplomatic or military means.
