NASA Successfully Launches a Rocket from the Remote Part of Northern Territory of Australia
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has launched the 'Mini Hubble' telescope from Australian soil. With this, it has created history by launching its first commercial spaceport outside the US. Suborbital sounding rocket has successfully taken off from Arnhem Space Centre. This is the first NASA
rocket to be launched from Australia since 1995.
NASA announced the launch of three rockets from the Arnhem Space Centre, located in the northern region of the Dhupuma Plateau, near Nhulunbuy. All thre rockets are 13-metre 'sounding' rockets, which will not reach space orbit, but will make scientific observations. The launch will set history in many respects for the
Australian space industry.
All three rockets are built by NASA and will be used for scientific investigations into the physics of the Sun, astrophysics and types of planetary science that we can only do in the Southern Hemisphere.
This agreement with NASA was announced in 2019. However, the launch program has been delayed due to the lockdown and travel restrictions implemented to
prevent the corona virus pandemic.
