The Central Government has extended the tenure of Attorney General K.K. Venugopal by 03 months
Central Government has extended K.K. Venugopal's tenure by 03 months and Venugopal has been appointed as Attorney General (AG).
His current term was to end on June 30. This is the third time that the Center has extended his tenure. Venugopal's tenure was extended in the year 2020 and in the year 2021.Venugopal was appointed as the
15th Attorney General of India in the year 2017. He replaced Mukul Rohatgi who was Attorney General
from 2014-2017.
Venugopal, an eminent advocate of the Supreme Court, has served on a large number of matters relating to
important issues of constitutional and corporate law. He was also the Additional Solicitor General of India
between 1979 and 1980. He has been honored with Padma Bhushan in 2002 and Padma Vibhushan in
2015.
He will lead the government's legal defense in several sensitive cases pending in the Supreme Court,
including those challenging the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution and the Citizenship Amendment Act. Attorney-General of India
The Attorney General of India (AG) is a part of the executive body of the Union. AG is the highest law officer of the country. Article 76 of the Constitution provides for the office of the Attorney General of India. The Attorney General is appointed by the President on the advice of the government.
He should be a person who is qualified to be appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court, that is to say, a citizen of India, having five years' experience of serving as a Judge of a High Court or should have experience of 10 years' practice in any High Court or in the opinion of the President, he should.be a person capable of judicial matters.
The term of office is not fixed by the constitution. The procedure and grounds for removal of Attorney General are not mentioned in the Constitution. He holds office during the pleasure of the President (may be removed by the President at any time).
