World's Largest Bacterium Discovered in Caribbean Islands
Recently scientists have discovered the world’s largest bacterium in Caribbean mangrove swamps. This
bacterium has been found in the Guadeloupe mangroves of the Caribbean Islands. This bacterium
has been named ‘Thiomargarita magnifica’. Most bacteria are microscopic, but it is large enough to be seen with the naked eyes.
The average length of this bacterium has been found to be one-third of an inch. According to the study, T. magnifica can grow up to 2 cm tall. It has a network of
membranes that can produce energy. Its DNA is contained within the T. magnifica cell in small membrane-bound organelles called pepins.
