DRDO successfully test-fired 'Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile'

On 24 June, 2022 Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and the Indian Navy have successfully flight-tested the Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) from the Chandipur Integrated Test Range off Odisha coast.

This test was done on 24 June, 2022 from the Indian Naval Ship. The VL- SRSAM is a ship-deployed weapon
system that can neutralize various airborne threats over a limited range, including ocean-skimming targets.

The system was successfully launched against a high-speed aerial target model aircraft. The flight path of the vehicle was monitored, taking into account the
health parameters, using multiple tracking devices deployed by ITR, Chandipur. The test launch was supervised by senior officials of DRDO and Indian Navy.

About VL-SRSAM

It is a rapid reaction surface-to-air missile indigenously designed and developed by DRDO for the Indian Navy, aimed at neutralizing various airborne threats at close range including sea-skimming targets.

This missile has a range of 50 km. It has an operational range of distance and the terminal stage features midcourse inertial guidance through a fiber optic
gyroscope and active radar homing.

This will further boost the defense capability of Indian Navy ships against air threats. It has also paved the way for integration of weapon systems on Indian naval
ships.

Development

Major units of Defense Research and Development Organization such as 'Defense Research and Development Laboratory' (DRDL) and Research Center Building (RCI) and Research and Development Establishment etc. have contributed to the development of the system.
