America's sky turned green due to ‘Derecho’
Recently some states of America were hit by a storm called Derecho, due to which the color of the sky turned green. Derecho commonly occur in parts of the central and eastern US. The year 2009 saw a'Super Derecho' which was the most intense and unusual derecho ever observed, it stretched from Kansas to Kentucky (US states) with wind speeds of 170 kilometers per hour.

Derecho

A Derecho is a broad, long-lasting straight-line storm, accompanied by heavy rain and thunderstorms. The name comes from the Spanish word 'la derecha' which means 'Straight'. Straight line storms are.those in which there is no rotation,. unlike thunderstorms.

These storms travel hundreds of miles and cover a vast area. It is a hot weather phenomenon that usually occurs in June and July. This is a rare l occurrence compared to other storm systems such as tornadoes or hurricanes.

Green Sky during Derecho

The skies turn green as a result of intense storms as the light interacts with the enormous amount of water they hold. Large raindrops scatter all other waves except the blue wavelengths, causing mainly blue light to penetrate beneath the storm cloud. This blue light mixes with the red- yellow color of the sun in the afternoon or evening and turns green.
