11 more wetlands added to the list of Ramsar sites in India
In the 75th year of independence in India, 11 more wetlands have been added to the list of Ramsar sites on August 13, 2022 to make a total of 75 Ramsar sites covering an area of 13,26,677 hectares in the country.
The 11 new sites include four in Tamil Nadu, three in Odisha, two in Jammu and Kashmir and one each in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Designation of these sites will help in conservation and management of these wetlands and efficient use of their resources.
Tamil Nadu has the maximum number of Ramsar sites at 14. After this there are 10 Ramsar sites in
Uttar Pradesh. India is one of the contracting parties for the signing of the Ramsar Treaty in Ramsar,
Iran in 1971. India signed it on February 1, 1982.

Tampara Lake- Odisha
Hirakud Reservoir- Odisha
Anshupa Lake- Odisha
Yashwant Sagar- Madhya Pradesh
Chitrangudi Bird Sanctuary-
Suchindram Theroor Wetland Complex- Tamil Nadu
Vaduvoor Bird Sanctuary- Tamil Nadu
Kanjirakulam Bird Sanctuary- Tamil Nadu
Thane Creek- Maharashtrian
Haigham Wetland Conservation Reserve- Jammu and Kashmir
Shallabugh Wetland Conservation Reserve- Jammu and Kashmir
