The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has added the 106-year- old astronomical observatory at Langat Singh College, Muzaffarpur, Bihar, to the list of critically endangered heritage observatories of the world, the first of its kind in eastern India.

The observatory was built in 1916 at the 123 year old Langat Singh College which is now affiliated to the Bhim Rao Ambedkar Bihar University. The first of its kind planetarium was also established in the college in India in 1946.

The observatory and planetarium functioned until the early 1970s and gradually began to decline over the years. At the moment both are completely in damaged state.
