International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples observed on 9th August

World Tribal Day or International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is celebrated every year on 09 August. This time the theme of International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is 'Role of Indigenous Women in the Preservation and Dissemination of Traditional Knowledge'.

Its purpose is to promote and protect the rights of the world's indigenous population and to acknowledge the contributions that indigenous peoples make to global issues such as environmental protection.

The day recognizes the first meeting of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations in Geneva in 1982. It is celebrated every year since 1994 as per the declaration of the United Nations. Even today many indigenous peoples experience extreme poverty, deprivation and other human rights violations.
