National Handloom Day Celebrated On 07 August
The 8th 'National Handloom Day' was organized across the country on 07 August 2022. The primary
objective of organizing this day is to create awareness about the handloom industry among the general public and to highlight its contribution to socio-economic development.
Apart from this, the day also emphasizes on protecting the handloom heritage of India and providing more opportunities to handloom weavers and workers.
This day was chosen as the National Handloom Day because the Swadeshi Movement was started in the Calcutta Town Hall on this day in the year 1905 to oppose the partition of Bengal by the British Government and was announced to boycott foreign goods and encourage Indian products.
In view of the importance of this day for almost a century, the first 'National Handloom Day' was inaugurated by the Prime Minister in the year 2015. It is to be known that the handloom sector of India
is a symbol of the country's glorious cultural heritage.
India's soft power has long been supported by the handloom and handicrafts sector. 'Khadi Diplomacy' is an example of this. The textile and handloom sector in India is the second largest source of employment and livelihood for the people after agriculture. My Handloom My Pride Expo
