Union Cabinet Approves India's Updated Nationally
Determined Contribution (NDC)
In August 2022, the Union Cabinet has approved India's updated Nationally DeterminedbContribution (NDC) under the ParisbAgreement. The updated NDCs will
bbe reported to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
This updated version will support India's long-term goal of net-zero by 2070 which is an important step towards achieving it. In addition it converts the 'Panchamrit' announced in COP26 into advanced climate goals. Significantly, India submitted its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the UNFCCC on October 2, 2015.
India's Revised Goals
Emission Intensity
India is now committed to reducing the emission intensity of gross domestic product (emissions per unit of GDP) by at least 45% fromn2005 levels. The current target was to reduce by 33% - 35%.
Power Generation
India also promises to ensure that at least 50% of installed electricity generation capacity in 2030 will be
based on non-fossil fuel based sources. This is higher than the current target of 40%.
What is the Nationally Determined Contribution?
Before the start of the Paris conference, more than 180
countries pledged to cut their carbon emissions. INDCs are recognized under the agreement, but it is not legally binding.
