Ambubachi Mela is being organized at Kamakhya Temple in Assam
Recently annual Ambubachi Mela has been organized at Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam. This fair is organized during the menstruation period of the goddess. Kamakhya Temple is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths located on the Nilachal Hills in Guwahati.
Ambubachi Mela symbolizes the fertility of Goddess Kamakhya. There is no idol in the temple.
Goddess Kamakhya is also known as Siddha Kubjika. She is also identified as Kali and Maha Tripur Sundari. This fair is also known as.the 'Maha Kumbh' of the East as it attracts lakhs of devotees from all over the world.
As compared to other parts of India, the taboos associated with menstruation are less in Assam due
to the observance of the time of menstruation as a ritual. The attainment of womanhood of girls in Assam is also celebrated in the form of a festival called 'Tuloni
Biya', which means small marriage. Ambubachi Mela is also an opportunity to promote awareness about menstrual hygiene.
