National Doctor's Day to be observed today
Every year 01 July is observed by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) as 'National Doctor's Day'. This year the theme of this day is ‘Family Doctors on the Front Line’. This day is celebrated to commemorate the birth
anniversary and death anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, former Chief Minister of West Bengal. This day was first celebrated in 1991 to recognize the contribution of former Chief Minister of Bengal Dr. B.C. Roy in the service of humanity.
Dr. Roy was a renowned physician, who made very important contributions in the medical field. He was born on 1 July, 1882 and died on the same date in the year 1962. He was also awarded the Bharat Ratna on 4 February, 1961. He was instrumental in the establishment of medical institutions like Jadavpur TB
Hospital, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, Victoria Institution (college), Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital and Chittaranjan Seva Sadan for women and children. He
was also a freedom fighter who later became the second Chief Minister of West Bengal.
