First World Kiswahili Language Day celebrated on 07 July
World Kiswahili Language Day will be celebrated every year on 07 July. This year it is the first Kiswahili Language Day. The theme of this day is Kiswahili for peace and prosperity. The purpose of celebrating this day is to promote the Kiswahili language as a tool to promote peace and multi-culturalism.

The resolution for this was adopted during the 41st session of UNESCO on 23 November 2021. Under this, it was announced to celebrate 7 July every year as World Kiswahili Day. Kiswahili is the first African language to be recognized as such by the United Nations. It is spoken by over 200 million people and is
one of the 10 most widely spoken languages in the world.

It is one of the most widely used African languages, comprising more than a dozen main dialects. It is a common language in many countries in East, Central and Southern Africa, as well as in the Middle East. It is also taught in leading universities and colleges globally
