Gita Gopinath becomes first woman to feature on IMF's 'Former Chief Economists' Wall'
India-born Gita Gopinath has become the first woman and the second Indian to be featured on the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) 'Former Chief Economists' Wall'. The first Indian to receive the honor was Raghuram Rajan, who was the IMF's chief economist and director of research between 2003 and 2006.
Gopinath was appointed as the Chief Economist of the IMF in October 2018 and was later promoted to the IMF's first Deputy Managing Director in December last year. Gopinath had served as the Washington based global lender's first female chief economist for three years.
Gopinath's research has been published in several top economics journals. Prior to her appointment as chief economist of the IMF, she was the John Zwanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University's Department of Economics. Before joining the faculty of Harvard University in 2005, she was an assistant professor of economics at the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago
