Notification of nomination for the election of 16th Vice President issued
On 05 July, 2022, the notification of nomination for the election of the 16th Vice President of the country has been issued. Forms can be filled till 19 July, 2022. The election of the Vice-President will be held on 06 August, 2022.
The Electoral College for the 16th Vice Presidential election consists of 233 elected members of the Rajya Sabha and 12 nominated members and 543 elected members of the Lok Sabha. The Electoral College consists of a total of 788 members from both the houses of the Parliament. The tenure of the current Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu will end on 10 August, 2022.
▪️ Vice President
The Vice President is the second highest constitutional office of India. He serves for a term of five years, but he can continue in office notwithstanding the expiry of the term until the office is taken over by the successor.
The Vice President can resign from office by giving his resignation to the President of India which becomes effective from the day the resignation is accepted. The Vice President is the ex-officio President of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) and does not hold any other office of profit.
▪️ Electoral College
According to Article 66 of the Constitution of India, the Vice President is elected by the members of the Electoral College. The Electoral College consists of the following-
1. Elected members of Rajya Sabha.
2. Nominated members of Rajya
Sabha.
3. Elected members of Lok Sabha.
