The Organization of African Unity was established in the year 1963 by the independent states of Africa..The purpose of the organization is to promote cooperation between African states. The Lagos Plan of Action was adopted by the Organization of African Unity in 1980.
The plan suggested that Africa should reduce dependence on the West by promoting intra-African trade. In 2002, the Organization of African Unity was replaced by the African Union, which aimed to accelerate "economic integration of the continent".
