Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar Abhiyan launched to celebrate International Coastal Cleanup Day

Under the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, a 75-day long 'Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar Abhiyan' was launched from 03 July, 2022 at 75 beaches across the country. This will be the first and longest running Coastal cleanup drive of its kind in the world, in which maximum number of people will participate.

Through this campaign, the objective of creating massive behavior change among the masses is to raise awareness about how the use of plastic is destroying our marine life. International Coastal Cleanup Day is observed globally on the third Saturday of September every year.

This year on 17 September, 2022, the Government of India along with other voluntary organizations and local society has started a cleanup campaign on the entire coastline of India, Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar. A mobile app 'Eco Mitram' has also been launched for the general public to spread awareness about the campaign and for the purpose of voluntary registration for beach cleanup activities on 17th September, 2022.

Ministry of Earth Sciences, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Indian Coast Guard, National Disaster Management Authority along with other social organizations and educational institutions will participate in this campaign.

The campaign will see massive public participation, both physical and virtual, primarily to spread awareness about reducing marine waste, minimal use of plastic, at- source segregation and waste management.
