Defense Minister Rajnath Singh launches 'Dunagiri' warship
On 15 July, 2022 Defense Minister of India Rajnath Singh has launched the Y-3023 warship 'Dunagiri' of
Project 17A built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders Limited (GRSE) in the Hooghly River in Kolkata.
Y-3023
Dunagiri is the fourth ship of Project 17A frigates. It is named after a mountain range located in the state of Uttarakhand.B'Dunagiri' is a reconstruction of the
erstwhile 'Dunagiri', Leander class ASW frigate; it has been involved in various challenging operations and
multinational exercises during its 33 years of service.
Project 17A Frigates
The Project 17A frigates are the follow-on to the P17 frigates (Shivalik class) with improved stealth features, advanced weaponry and a platform management system with sensors.
Seven frigates under the P-17A for the Indian Navy - four at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL) in Mumbai
and three at Garden Reach Shipbuilders Limited (GRSE) in Kolkata are being developed and will be equipped with advanced stealth capability.
The main advanced stealthbfeatures of the P-17A relate to the smaller radar cross-section of the ship achieved through the use of a special structure and shape that reduces radar wave reflection. The P17A warships incorporate new design concepts for improved survivability, maritime maintenance, stealth and maneuverability.
Another important feature is the low acoustic noise emanating from the ship's propellers, operating
machinery such as diesel generators, etc. This helps detect the presence of sonar on other ships. Such stealth characteristics play an important role in improving the survivability of the ship in any adverse environment during operation.
