Gunawardene as the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. Ranil Wickremesinghe made the first appointment on the first day of his term, a day after he was sworn in
as the President. Gunawardene was made Home Minister in April during the tenure of former.President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. party of the ruling Sri Lanka.Podujana Peramuna.(SLPP). After returning from the Netherlands in.1979 completing higher education.there, Dinesh Gunawardene led the.party in place of his father Philip
Gunawardene.

His father was a prominent face of.the Left Socialist movement in the.British era before the country's. independence in 1948.
