National Broadcasting Day observed on 23rd July
Every year 23 July is celebrated as National Broadcasting Day across the country. On this day in the year 1927, the Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC) started radio broadcasting from Bombay station.
Radio broadcasting services in India were started in the year 1923 during the British rule under the initiative of Radio Club of Bombay. In 1930, the British government took over radio broadcasting and started the Indian State Broadcasting Service (ISBS).
The IBC, a private entity, was given permission by the British government to operate two radio stations in the country. IBC was permanently renamed as the Indian State Broadcasting Service (ISBS) in May 1932. Later on June 8, 1936, the Indian State Broadcasting Service (ISBS) was converted into All India Radio (AIR) and in the year 1957 it was named Akashvani. Prasar Bharati is the largest public broadcasting agency in India and was established by an Act of Parliament.
