National Flag Day celebrated across the country on 22nd July
India celebrates National Flag Daybon 22 July every year. On this day in 1947, the tricolor was adopted as
the national flag of India. Thebadoption of the National Flag of India was discussed by the members of thebConstituent Assembly of India at the Constitution Hall in Delhi on 22 July, 1947.
The adoption of the tricolor as thebnational flag of India was proposed by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The
National Flag of India commemorates the adoption of thebIndian National Flag and India'sbindependence from the British Raj in 1947.
The Constituent Assembly adopted the tricolor in its present form on 22 July 1947. During the meeting it
was proposed that the Indian national flag will be a 'horizontal tricolor of dark saffron, white and dark green in equal proportion'.
It was also proposed that the white stripe in the center would have a dark blue Dharma Charkha. While the saffron color on the top of the national flag represents the strength and courage of India, the white middle band represents peace and truth and the green color at the bottom represents the growth, fertility and auspiciousness of the land. For the first time in independent India, the Indian National Flag was hoisted by the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru at the Red Fort on August 16, 1947.
Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign
Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to hoist the tricolor at their homes between August 13 and August 15 to strengthen the Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign. This campaign will further deepen the association with our national flag.

Some important facts of Indian National Flag
The national flag of India was designed by Indian freedom fighter Pingali Venkayya. In the initial flag
design, Venkayya drew a spinning wheel instead of the Ashoka Chakra. Mahatma Gandhi first proposed the tricolor flag to the Indian National Congress in 1921.
He proposed to inscribe the national flag with a spinning wheel on a white stripe.
The tricolor was hoisted for the first time on 13 April, 1923, during a procession in Nagpur to protest the tragic Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
The Charkha in the National Flag of India was replaced by the Ashoka Chakra by the Constituent Assembly Committee constituted on 23 June, 1947. The Government of India amended the Flag Code of India on 26 January, 2002, allowing people to hoist the national flag at their homes and offices.
