Eminent social worker Padmashree Avadh
Kaushal passes away
Recently Padmashree awardee eminent social worker Avadh Kaushal passed away after prolonged illness. He was 87 years old. He was the founder of an NGO
named Rural Litigation and Entitlement Center (located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand).
He was known for his fight against human rights and protection of the environment. Kaushal was close to
former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He was awarded the Padmashree in the year 1987.
In 2003, Kaushal was invited by the United Nations to the World Summit in Geneva to chair a panel discussion on the importance of local content within information and communication technology. Kaushal was also named as a member of the International
Committee to investigate war crimes and disappearances in Sri Lanka after the civil war in that
country.
