10 more sites in India included in Ramsar List
On 03 August, 2022, India has added 10 more Ramsar sites, taking the total Ramsar sites from 54 to 64. The new sites include 06 wetlands from Tamil Nadu and one each from Goa, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha.
1. Koonthankulam Bird Sanctuary- Tamil Nadu
2. Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve- Tamil Nadu
3. Udayamarthandapuram Bird Sanctuary- Tamil Nadu
4. Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary- Tamil Nadu
5. Vellode Bird Sanctuary -Tamil Nadu
6. Vembanur Wetland Complex- Tamil Nadu
7. Satkosia Gorge- Odisha
8. Nanda Lake- Goa
9. Ranganathitu B.S.- Karnataka
10. Sirpur wetland- Madhya Pradesh
India is one of the signatory to the Ramsar Convention signed in Ramsar, Iran in 1971. India signed it on 1 February 1982. So far 64 wetlands covering an area of 12,50,361 hectares have been designated as Ramsar Sites of International Importance. India and China now have the largest number of wetlands of international importance.
