National Javelin Throw Day observed on 7th August


National Javelin Day is celebrated every year on 07 August in the country. The second 'Javelin Throw Day' has been celebrated by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on August 7, 2022. The day is celebrated in honor of Neeraj Chopra, the athlete who won India a gold medal in the javelin throw event at the Tokyo Olympics.

The initiative to celebrate Javelin Throw Day was taken in Khandara, the village of javelin throw champion and Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra. The day was celebrated to encourage the youth to take up the sport of Javelin Throw. For this, the day of August 7 was chosen because on August 7 Neeraj Chopra had received a gold medal in the javelin throw competition.

The Athletics Federation of India has announced to celebrate '7 August' as National Javelin Throwing Day every year on 10 August 2021. It is noteworthy that on August 7, 2021, Neeraj Chopra won the first gold for the country in competing in the javelin throw at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
