U.U. Lalit will be 49th Chief Justice of India
Justice Uday Umesh Lalit will be the 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI). His name as CJI was formally announced on 10 August. Let us tell you that a few days ago, Chief Justice N.V. Ramana had recommended the name of Justice UU Lalit to the Law Ministry for the next Chief Justice of the country. Current CJI Ramana is retiring on August 26, 2022.
Justice UU Lalit will take oath as the 49th CJI on August 27, 2022. His tenure will be only 74 days. As CJI, Justice Lalit will head the collegium, which will include Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice Kaul, Justice Nazeer and Justice Indira Banerjee.
With Justice Banerjee retiring on September 23, 2022, Justice K.M. Joseph will enter the collegium. Justice Lalit will retire as CJI on November 8, 2022. After this, Justice Chandrachud will be appointed as the 50th CJI.
