Arunachal Pradesh and
Assam sign 'Namsai Declaration' to settle border
Recently Assam and Arunachal.Pradesh have signed the 'Namsai Declaration' towards resolving.their seven decade old border dispute. The declaration was signed
at Namsai in Arunachal Pradesh after the third round of meetings between Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma on the issue. Both the states share 804 km long border.
Although there was no dispute.initially, over the years, allegations of encroachment of land by.residents of one state on another have led to controversy and violence.
A case on this issue is pending in.the Supreme Court since 1989. There were 123 border settlements
which were in dispute earlier. They.have now decided to limit it to 86 villages. Also, they have decided to
resolve the problem by September 15 of this year.
According to the two chief ministers, who called it a
milestone, the signing has furthered the closeness and
brotherhood between the two neighboring northeastern states. As per the announcement, 28 of the 123 villages located within the constitutional limits of Arunachal Pradesh will remain with the state.
In contrast, three villages would remain of Assam as a result of Arunachal Pradesh giving up its claims. Six more villages will remain in Arunachal Pradesh as they could not be traced on the Assam side
