Rahul Narvekar becomes the youngest speaker of the country

Mumbai-based lawyer and first-time legislator Rahul Narvekar has been elected as the youngest speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and is the youngest in India to hold this important constitutional post. Narvekar scripted history by becoming the youngest MLA to be elected as the 16th Speaker (since 1960) and is now also the youngest MLA to hold the coveted top legislative post in the country.

Narvekar got a total of 164 votes in support and 107 went to the Shiv Sena candidate. During the election of the Speaker, 12 members remained absent and 3 MLAs stayed away from voting. Narvekar (45), a MLA from Colaba, quit Shiv Sena in 2014 and contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections as an NCP
candidate from Maval constituency. Although he faced defeat, he was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council and remained its member till 2019.
