Nitin Gupta appointed as.new chairman of Central
Board of Direct Taxes
Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Nitin Gupta has been appointed as the new chairman of the Central
Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). Gupta is a 1986 batch IRS officer of Income Tax cadre. He is serving as Member (Investigation) of the Board and is due to retire in September next year. After the retirement of J B Mohapatra on April 30, 2022, the post of CBDT chief was held by Sangita Singh, a board member and 1986 batch IRS officer in an additional capacity.
Prior to this, Gupta has also served as the Director General of Competition Commission of India. Nitin Gupta is currently working as Member (Investigation) in CBDT and assumed this charge in September 2021.
What is CBDT
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is a part of the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance. CBDT is empowered by the Board of Revenue Act 1963. The CBDT is headed by a chairman and can have up to six members, who are of the rank of Special Secretary.
It is the administrative body for the Income Tax Department. CBDT provides necessary inputs for the
policies and schemes of direct tax in India.
It is responsible for the administration of direct tax laws through the Income Tax Department. All matters relating to direct taxes in India were handed over to the Central Board of Direct Taxes with effect from 1 January 1964.
