Scotland becomes the first country in the world to providevfree access to sanitary products
Scotland has become the firstncountry in the world to make sanitary products free. The Period Products Bill was passed in the Parliament by voice vote in August
2022. Period products will be madenavailable free of cost to all public institutions under the law. With
period products becoming a law fornall, the government has estimatednspending of £24 million a year. Twonyears ago, Scotland began providing free period products schools, colleges and universities.
Under this law, the localbadministration will have to providebperiod products free of cost. It will have to be based on the work already being done by councils like
North Ayrshire.
Here already free tampons and sanitary pads are being given in public buildings since 2018. The bill was introduced by Scottish Membernof Parliament Monica Lennon, who has been campaigning to end period poverty since 2016.
